7 Ways To Get Your Natural Hair Spring & Summer Ready

The days are getting warmer, the clocks will soon be going forward, spring and summer are finally within reach!  Being a spring born baby I love the spring season and I also love the heat of the summer sun, when it decides to make an appearance. But as the change in season moves in, there also needs to be a change in your hair care routine as you begin to get your hair ready for the spring and summer weather. You may even feel this is the time to kick start your natural hair care routine. But don’t worry, there’s no need to panic, just stick with me as I walk you through 7 simple steps to get your tresses spring and summer ready.

  1. Switch to Lighter Creams

In winter you may have opted for more protective styling and used heavier creams to seal and hold in moisture for longer due to the dryer winter air. However with the emergence of warmer weather you may want to let those curls loose a bit more and using very heavy creams may well weigh your hair down. Now is the time to reach for the lighter creams and leave in conditioners when you are wearing your hair out, to allow you curls to pop and flow freely or your coils to bloom in all their glory.

  1. Get a Trim

Spring is a great time to get rid of those brittle ends you’ve been hanging onto over the winter months. Having a trim will leave your hair looking fresh and feeling great, making it ready to flaunt in the spring sunshine. Remember to focus on health over length and you will soon see the length follow.

  1. Be Prepared

We’ve all heard of April showers right? Well they are a real phenomenon and can pounce at any moment raining upon your beautiful twist out or sleeked up style. It’s important to remember that just because the weather is warmer it doesn’t mean we won’t get caught by surprise with the spring showers. It’s always good practice to carry a satin scrunchie, head tie and umbrella with you just in case you need to modify your hairstyle due to a swift change in weather. Don’t get caught out, be prepared with the tools you need to make modifications if the weather forces you to do so.

  1. Rotate The Shampoo

During the winter you may well have found yourself using more products to help add and seal in moisture to your hair. More products equals more product build up. With more product build up, you may have also opted for the use of a clarifying shampoo to remove the product build up sustained between washed. As the warmer weather creeps in, you may find yourself using less heavy products and less products in general. This is a good time to go between your moisturising and clarifying shampoo, perhaps opting for a clarifying wash once or twice a month.

  1. Get Those Treatments Going                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                During the winter months our focus tends to be on adding and maintaining moisture and protecting our hair from the cold weather, so you can be excused for missing the odd treatment or two. Now that the warmer weather is on its way, it’s a great time to reintroduce those much needed hair treatments to help your hair flourish during the spring. If you haven’t done a protein treatment in a while, spring time is a great time to restore some of the depleted protein due to the different processes we put our hair through. Similarly, if you have been lacking in the hot oil treatment department, it’s time to restart the different treatments we need to do from time to time as part of our healthy air routine.

  1. Prepare For The Frizz

With the warmer weather approaching and the certainty of spring showers (if you live in the UK you can guarantee it!), the atmosphere will give a more humid feel which can often result in frizz. The wonderful style that took you an age to create can fall flat or become frizzy due to the rain or humid conditions that spring and summer bring. While leaving home with an umbrella and head scarf can come in very handy, you may also want to invest in some anti-frizz products which should help hold your styles for longer and also help keep frizz at bay. On a side note I will say that frizz can sometimes be inevitable so you will sometimes just have to embrace it if you can’t avoid it.

  1. Switch It Up

Spring and summer is also a great time to switch things up and try a new hairstyle. Experiment a bit and have some fun with new styles. Styles for brunches and lazy days in the park, summer shows, sporting events and even the odd boat ride, all call for a new style (or two, or three). So don’t be shy, create a pin board with some different style inspiration and get experimenting.

So there you have it, 7 simple ways you can get your hair spring and summer ready and looking great. Do you have any other ways you prepare you hair for the warmer seasons? I’d love to hear about them, let me know in the comments below.
